Vasile Rus is an associate professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Memphis. He works in the area of syntax-based semantics with applications to intelligent tutoring, textual entailment, question answering, reading comprehension, search and many other applications where semantics is a must.
Background
Dr. Vasile Rus received his Bachelors degree in Computer Science from Technical University of Cluj-Napoca in June 1997 with a Diploma Thesis entitled Distributed and Collaborative Configuration Management , masterpieced while at LSR Laboratory, INPG, Grenoble, France. Dr. Rus earned his Masters of Science in Computer Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science degrees from Southern Methodist University at Dallas, Texas in May 1999 and May 2002, respectively. During his graduate studies Vasile mainly worked on transforming WordNet glosses into a natural language based knowledge representation that is first order logic and incorporates syntactic information in the form of positional arguments of predicates. He applied WordNet in logic forms to boost performance of Question Answering systems.
Vasile was involved in the development of SMU’s Question Answering system that participated in the Q/A competition organized by NIST (National Institute for Standards and Technology) as part of TREC-9 conference (Text REtrieval Conference). He was an analyst for the second SMU’s Q/A system that participated in the Q/A track at TREC-10. Vasile has also worked on Question Answering on Semantic Web. Dr. Rus is currently the PI on an IES-funded project called DeepTutor that foster students’ deep understanding of complex science topics through dialogue tutoring and learning progressions.
His research interests include intelligent systems, software engineering, text and data mining, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, knowledge representation based on natural language, and syntax-based semantics with applications to autotutoring, textual entailment, question answering and other applications where semantics is a must. His professional interests are mainly focused on systems software, software systems analysis and design, configuration management.
