Workshop Structure
David Williamson Shaffer will begin the half-day workshop with a short overview presentation introducing the concept of epistemic games, briefly describing the games we have already developed and the different components that go into creating games based on a particular theory of learning.
Participants will then form small groups (based in part on the pre-workshop submissions) and rotate through five different stations, each targeting a specific component involved in the design, implementation, and assessment of theory-based games.
After everyone has rotated through the five stations, each small group will compile their ideas from the day and report their experiences to the larger group. These reports will be posted on an online discussion forum for those interested in continuing the conversations started during the session.
Workshop Topics
The five stations will each focus on a different tool and/or topic in the development of theory-based games for learning:
- Elizabeth Bagley will lead a station on the tools and processes of aligning game activities and interactions with hypotheses generated from learning theory.
- David Hatfield will lead a station on how elements of theory can be embedded within the computational simulation tool at the core of a game.
- Aran Nulty will lead a station on game implementation and techniques for ensuring that game play is going according to plan while providing the flexibility required within any learning environment.
- Padraig Nash will lead a station on the process of training adult mentors to play the role of characters in a game when needed, and at the development of automated NPCs to fill those roles.
- Gina Navoa Svarovsky will lead a station on assessment, including a discussion of issues in data collection and analysis to understand the effectiveness of and the learning processes within theory-based games.
